The tallow candles were made at the manufactory behind Shuffleton Mill. First established by Mr. Fleeman, it was taken over by William Blow, who continued the business with his eldest son William John. Mr. & Mrs. Blow Snr. lived near the factory, the mill and Shuffleton cottages, home to their son Henry. William John, his wife Mary and their three year old daughter Gertrude lived at Marshfield-terrace in 1881, until the Blows retired from the tallow factory. With the development of steam power, gas lighting and chemical oils, Mr. Blow Junior became the local agent for the Anglo-American Oil Company in 1893 and also opened a greengrocery.
