15) 39 - 51 Richard Cooper Street - 1909 / 1911

On 22 December 1906, Richard Cooper sold "all that piece of land containing 1860 square yards" for £410 to John Walker Bounded on the North by RC Streeet, on the South by property lately belonging to Richard Fleeman but then the Executors of Reverend T. H. Hall, on the West by property of Richard Cooper sold to William Robert Wormald (No.37), with a right of way over the passage five feet wide on the western end of the site (it still runs between 37 and 39, continuing along the southern boundary as a rear alleyway before it jinks around No. 51 RC Street and back into RC Street). On the eastern boundary of this site Walker built three houses fronting Hook Road - Nos. 33, 35 and 37. Behind those is the terrace of houses 39 - 51 RC Street, no doubt also built by Walker.

And, it is believed that John Walker built the two houses 28 and 30 Marshfield, mentioned in section ( )above and to have lived there himself before his move to 33 Hook Road.

CAUTION - On second thoughts, the style of these properties suggests they hark back to Victorian days, and they may have been the work of Walter Dixie.  Further consideration will be given to this query.

John Walker was a native of Swinefleet. He and his family were the first residents of Kauri House, 33 Hook Road and he built many other houses on Hook Road (beyond Fountayne Street). Mr. Walker was also the contractor for the building of the former Goole Public Library (1905) in Carlisle Street, the Swimming Baths (1906) that stood in Pasture Road, and the Isolation Hospital (now Holland House) at Westfield Banks. Like Walter Dixie, his predecessor, John Walker later became Clerk of Works to Goole Urban District Council and several Goole builders served their time with him.

I am researching my family tree and believe that the EDITH COULT you have llisted as being at 51 may be my maternal great grandmother. She and her family are listed on the census for 1901 as being at what looks like Chambers Buildings and other residents around her are listed as being in Cooper Street. Is this the same as Richar Cooper Street?

I believe, but not noted with any degree of observation, that Chambers Buildings, belonging to the Chambers family, were probably erected on land behind what eventually became Richard Cooper Street. Earlier census entries might show their location more accurately. Try looking from 1841 for entries, in Hook parish at that time, not Goole. As for Cooper Street, there was another street spelled Couper, in Old Goole, built by George Couper. It is very easy to mix the two streets but they were separated by distance and also in time. RC Street not developed until much later in 1880s by Richard Cooper. Hope this helps.

Further to Chambers Houses/Buildings/Cottages - I have a note about 1871 Census referring to Chambers Cottages as situated in that area of Parish of Hook comprising: "Paradise Place, Prospect Place, Church Street, the north side of North Street, Billington Row, Belle Vue Terrace, Prospect Terrace, William Street, Spring Gardens, Providence Place, Fleemans Buildings, Mill Yard and the two houses called Model Cottages". If you do know Goole as it is now, this locates entries for occupants of Greens Cottages/Chambers Cottages adjacent to Fleemans Buildings - now that area on south side of RC Street. Pedro has contributed lots of information and queries about some cottages he remembers between RC Street and Mill Yard - very probably the same site as the Chambers/Greens Cottages.
