17) Phoenix Street Development 1906

In February 1906 Goole Urban District Council considered that further plans submitted by Messrs. Good for houses in Phoenix Street were not in accordance with the town's building byelaws.

Cllr. L. Holmes (a local historian and East ward representative) spoke out:  "tendering was intended to improve the dwellings provided for the working classes and to give them greater airspace than hitherto been enjoyed."

His fellow member, Cllr. Huntington, the grocer, pointed out that "it was a big mistake to crowd a lot of people in small places.  They had it in their hands to do what was right."

The Council Committee voted down Cllr. Blyth's motion, seconded by Cllr. Chambers (a former Borough Surveyor) and the plans were not passed;  only 3 votes in favour,  17 votes against.
